Why Rucking is Now My Exercise of Choice

I used to be a runner. It was simple, effective, and always got the job done when it came to keeping fit. But, as the wheels of time kept turning, and osteoarthritis started creeping into my hips coupled with some persistent feet issues, running began to lose its charm. I needed something else—something that wasn’t just a walk in the park but was also kind on my ailing joints.

Cancelling my gym membership was a conscious choice. The confined, somewhat smelly space was becoming less appealing. Sure, I loved rowing, but it was tethered to the gym, and with retirement looming, unnecessary expenses needed trimming. Moreover, my heart always found solace outdoors, in the embrace of fresh air and the subtle melodies of nature. It was clear; I needed an exercise routine that didn’t confine me to closed spaces, something flexible yet challenging.

Enter rucking—the unsung hero in the fitness world. It was like finding a golden middle; a perfect blend of strength training and cardio, without stepping foot in a gym. The beauty of rucking is its simplicity and adaptability. All it required was a backpack and some weight. No fancy equipment, no restrictive schedules, just me and the open world, be it in the glory of sunshine or the freshness of rain.

Rucking is not just walking; it's a workout with benefits that run deep. It caters to personal preferences—you can adjust the weight according to your fitness level and desired intensity. It’s not merely about endurance but also involves significant strength training, positively impacting muscles, bones, and posture.

The flexibility of rucking is liberating. It isn’t bound by time or place; it’s a 24/7 available exercise. There’s an invigorating sense of freedom in being able to work out anytime, anywhere—be it a dedicated outdoor session or an indoor treadmill routine when the weather is less forgiving. The idea of incorporating it into household chores with a weighted backpack is also on the horizon. It’s fitness on your terms, in your space, and at your pace.

Rucking also opened doors to both social and solo workout sessions. It could be a solitary communion with nature or a shared experience with friends or fellow fitness enthusiasts—a versatile exercise adapting to my mood and social preferences.

In the realm of practicality and affordability, rucking stands unparalleled. Its low cost coupled with the profound impact it has on strength and cardio makes it an exceptional choice, especially when juxtaposed with the daunting expenses of gym memberships or specialized equipment.

In essence, rucking has been a transformative experience. It allowed me to redefine fitness, weaving it seamlessly into my life’s tapestry without the constraints of gym timings or the monotony of enclosed spaces. It has been a journey of losing not just 30 pounds, but also the baggage of inconvenient, less appealing workout options. Rucking emerged as a beacon of hope, an exercise that resonates with my love for the outdoors, aligns with my fitness goals, and harmonizes with my daily rhythm.
